The hen scrambles and scratches the dust of the earth in search for her daily bread and helplessly, she lays eggs for her killers. She is dazed with the future of a bloody knife.
Nigerians have joined the chicken race. We have played the role of the 'yes sah fellows' in the drama of life even better than Genevieve and Omotola put together. We have thrown accolades to the very ones that have robbed us from our glorious past. We have sunk so low in the quagmire of shame and reproach. Slashed still with the whips of corruption and deceit.
And yet! I mean yet! What do we do?! We all sit down mopping all around and end up doing nothing.
Our fathers sit on the squeaky benches at the Corner Stone Bush Bar caressing their shrunken intestines with gulps of Chelsea dry gin cause they can't afford the expensive bottles of The Winston Cocktail.
All they do is talk about the latest trip 'the flying President' has made or how Man Utd lost 4:0 to Chelsea.
All they do is beat up their wives later in the evening with clenched fists which were hardened due to too much exposure to the harsh dry cement as they carry bricks to build the houses of those who destroyed theirs.
Our Mothers! They come back from the market complaining about how prices have increased with Usain Bolt's speed. They tuck in our children to bed after preaching to their ears that there is nothing that be done to abate the problems we face.
The truth is that there is a lot to be done. But instead of seeking out solutions to our numerous problems we sit and watch the people who promised to serve us drive through the streets with top security aides bullet-proof cars and soldiers that whip other drivers who refuse to clear the road for their entourage to pass through! "Yeah! Clear the road, your servant is passing through! We are now masters ruled by the servants.
We are in a nation where the fathers of yesterday are still ruling, compensating us with the tag 'the youths are the leaders of tomorrow'; a tomorrow that never ends.
It is now time to say no! Change begins with us. It is not time to complain, but time to work for the peace and prosperity of this great country, Nigeria. It is not time to secede, but to remain more united than ever before.
Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Tafawa Balewa and Herbert Macaulay are all dead and gone, but let their spirits of nationalism live and thrive in us. We can do it!
