WHERE DID THE FIVE NAIRA NOTE GO TO?

AN ARTICLE BY ONI TOYOSI
The sorry-state of the five naira note today is surprising. Five naira note in Nigeria used to be an efficacious note. This note as small as it is, used to be a prodigious compensation for a job-well-done by the children of the peasants. Where is the dignity of that note now? Is that note still efficacious?
Going back to the good old days, school kids in the eighties and nineties were regarded as rich if they brought #five naira or a little lesser along with them to school. Where is the power of this note now?
This now-powerless note, used to a trademark of the children of the indigent. It's demise (because it's now almost powerless) has meant a lot of problems for them. Although, the children of the affluent might not be able to easily identify this note, the picture and the still looms afresh in the memories of us individuals who grew up in the suburbs.
The powerlessness and uselessness of this note has gotten to the extent that it cannot even calm a child down amidst tears for a mint or a candy! Even some "professional" or "dignified" and "honourable" beggars now reject the once powerful note. What less can be expected of this note?
The sinisterness of this development is the colossal effect on the Nigerian economy. Let's think about it: what will happen if eventually the five naira note is rendered teetotally powerless by this pitiable economy? Maybe we'll then turn to the ten naira note to perform the role that the five naira note failed at. If this whole instability in the value of the naira still continues, then the twenty naira note will readily be the next option. All these would be happening amidst hardship and joblessness. Desperate Nigerians will then take to the perpetration of heinous activities just to make ends meet. This will mean doom for our country.
The Federal Government, through the Central Bank of Nigeria should devise a means of stopping this imminent havoc from occuring by making policies that will help ameliorate the whole issue. This should be done pronto too!
